Focusing for Interpretation of Pronouns
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent studies in both artificial intelligence and linguistics have demonstrated the need for a theory of the comprehension of anaphoric expressions, a theory that accounts for the role of syntactic and semantic effects, as well as inferential knowledge in explaining how anaphors are understood. In this paper a new approach, based on a theory of the process of focusing on parts of the discourse, is used to explain the interpretation of anaphors. The concept of a speaker's loci is defined, and their use is demonstrated in choosing the interpretations of personal pronouns. The rules for choosing interpretations are stated within a framework that shows: how to control search in inferring by a new method called constraint checking; how to take advantage of syntactic, semantic and discourse constraints on interpretation; and how to generalize the treatment of personal pronouns, to serve as a framework for the theory of interpretation for all anaphors.

متن کاملAnaphora Resolution: Short-Term Memory and Focusing
INTRODUCTION Anaphora resolution is the process of determining the referent of ~uaphors. such as definite noun phrases and pronouns, in a discourse. متن کاملThe time course of the use of implicit causality information in the processing of pronouns: A visual world paradigm study
Several theoretical accounts have been proposed with respect to the issue how quickly the implicit causality verb bias affects the understanding of sentences such as ‘‘John beat Pete at the tennis match, because he had played very well’’. They can be considered as instances of two viewpoints: the focusing and the integration account. The focusing account claims that the bias should be manifest ...
